Abstract

Legal English – Introduction to Law –is an introductory textbook designed for law students to acquire essential legal concepts and terminology in English. It presents the fundamental notions of law, the legal rule, its characteristics and legal sanctions, as well as the main divisions of law. The textbook introduces the distinction between national and international law, public and private law, and mixed areas of law. It also provides an overview of judicial organization and the principal national institutions. Particular attention is given to the sources of law, the hierarchy of legal norms, and the application of law over time. The second part introduces the theory of subjective rights, their holders and their main classifications. Throughout the textbook, legal concepts are presented in accessible English and related to the basic principles of the Algerian legal system. The objective is to develop both students’ legal knowledge and their ability to understand and use fundamental legal English terminology.
